Land Rover Repair: 97 Discover Engine/Transmission Lock, thought starter, transmission lock

Question
I have a 97 Discovery 4 liter automatic.  I sprayed the engine/transmission at a car wash to degrease it.  Engine ran rough but I drove it home just fine and parked it.  Let it dry out and went to start it later.  Engine would crank but would not start.  Left it alone for awhile and came back later.  Tried starting it, engine would crank but not start.  Then tried to start again and engine cranking/starter stopped.  Just the starter clicking.  Thought starter was jammed.  Got a socket wrench and and rotated front pully. Can rotate engine about 1/2 turn either direction before engine resists further rotatation.

Transmission shift is in park.  No reverse lights on.

Any idea on what this is?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
1) Remove the spark plugs and see if the engine turns over then.

2) Remove the starter and see if it turns over.

3) Remove the serpentine belt and try again.

If, at that point, the motor jams at half a turn something is wrong inside and you'll have to pull the motor for repair.
