Land Rover Repair: 97 Discovery engine/transmission lock?, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
I have a 97 Discovery 4 liter automatic.  I sprayed the engine/transmission at a car wash to degrease it.  Engine ran rough but I drove it home just fine and parked it.  Let it dry out and went to start it later.  Engine would crank but would not start.  Left it alone for awhile and came back later.  Tried starting it, engine would crank but not start.  Then tried to start again and engine cranking/starter stopped.  Just the starter clicking.  Thought starter was jammed.  Got a socket wrench and and rotated front pully. Can rotate engine about 1/2 turn either direction before engine resists further rotatation.

Transmission shift is in park.  No reverse lights on.

Any idea on what this is?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Mike,

what prompted you to manually rotate engine?  Just curious.

When you wash the engine compartment, it is best to wrap sensitive components in some sort of waterproof casing.  Grocery bags and duct tape are my favourites.  I wrap the MAF, the coil, the coilpack, the starter and solenoid, the fuse box, master C and ABS.

On older Disco's, washing the engine without doing the above is a recipe for the problem you are having with your DII.  Older Disco's have a spark amplifier module that is extremely sensistive to water and have been known to fail...same goes for the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor).  Both are very expensive to replace.

For your DII, I would take a hair dryer and carefully start drying out some of the electrical components.  Hopefully, you won't blow water into components.  Perhaps a drying out period is needed.

Check that engine fuse box to see if it's wet.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
