Land Rover Repair: Defender09 300tdi cutting out, breather tube, small spring

Question
Hi Attila,
Can you help please?
My 10 year old Defender engine can cut out without warning whilst driving along and the battery warning light comes on. The power steering naturally goes off and I have to pull off the road.

I wait 10 minutes then I can restart the engine and drive away. Has only just started happening and the vehicle is serviced regularly by Land Rover who don't know what is the cause. It has just had its major service with fuel filter and timing belt changed but the engine was cutting out before and after the service. You can drive 80 miles without it happening.

Any suggestoins please?

David

Answer
Yes the problem is typical.
1. check the breather tube the tank for permeability.
Be cause if it stucked, the tank can be vacuumed.

2. the fuel tube in the fuel tank can be stucked by some piece of something in the fuel. You have to pull the sucktion tube from the fuel puel pump, take of the fuel filler's cap, and carefully blow across the whole tubing. Then clean the settling pan it the tube near the tank (it has a cylindrical aluminium housing). Then the perfect way to take the tank off and from the top of it you can see how much the mange in it, and clean if nececerry.
Naturally change the fuel flter too.

3. the fuel cut-off solenoid can make this problem. To make sure you must take out the solenoid, and put off the barrel and the small spring then reassemble the solenoid. (You have to know in this way you can't stop the engine with the ignition key! You must choke it by step out from the clutch while you depress the brake, and the transmission in 1st gear.

So, these are my quick ideas, i hop they will be helpful.
