Land Rover Repair: 2000 LR Disco II - ABS/TC/HDS Lights On, obd scanner, john mcinnis

Question
About a week ago John McInnis responded to Alyssa about a 2000 LR Discovery II and mention that those three lights can come on at any time. Well, it just happened to me a week ago or so. The original vehicle had about 100K miles on it and there was a major engine failure with a massive oil leak, I had a used 18K engine put in. It worked fine for about 500 miles. Check engine light came on first. OBDII codes mentioned a few misfires, O2 sensors and a manufacturer controlled unit. Replaced an air filter (was soaked in oil) as well as plugs - misfires went away temporarily, but now I have am Xmas tree ornament for a dashboard and a rough idling engine. I keep erasing fault codes when Check Engine light comes on, but the TC/ABS/HDC trio is always on. Replacing what turned out to be an oil drenched MAF sensor tomorrow, then will look at the O2 sensors. Any recommendations?

Answer
The TC/ABS/HDC lights are all on because there is a fault that affects those three systems.  The most likely fault is a wheel speed sensor, which might require a sensor or a hub to fix.  You will need to find a shop with the specialist LR test system to read the ABS codes because an OBD scanner won't talk to those systems.

With respect to misfires, the common causes in order of liklihood are:  plugs, plug wires, coil packs, sticking valves.
