Land Rover Repair: Truck wont come out of park, land rover discovery, land rover dealer

Question
Hi,
I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery that won't come out of park. The brake lights work and I read the answer you gave the gentlmen, about popping off the gear gover to check if a clip is on and I was wondering if you could let me know what the clip I'm looking for looks like??? I took off the cover but have no clue what to look for. Trying to avoid having to have it towed 100 miles to the nearest land rover dealer.
HELP!

Answer
Hi Sara,

once you've removed the sound deadener pad (insulation) you should see a cable coming up in front and the to side of your shifter.  The C clip that holds this cable in place has been known to pop off.

Actually, it's more like a letter U upside-down.  It's normal position is on the base where the cable enters the console area.

The C clip secures the outer cable to the selector lever bracket.

If this is not the cause, it could be the start inhibitor switch attached to the transmission or the BCU or EAT ECU that governs gear position and starting respectively.

The BCU (body control unit) tells the EAT (electronic automatic transmission) ECU (expensive computer umpire thingy...sorry...electronic control unit) what gear the transmission is in.

Usually, this problem is sensor related but sometimes the start inhibitor can be faulty.

Best of luck,
