Land Rover Repair: Freelander Diesels, substantial undertaking, emission compliance

Question
Is it possible to put a  diesel engine as a replacement into a petrol engined Freelander.
Its a 1999 5 dr 1.8 petrol.

Thanks

Answer
Anything is possible, but it would be a substantial undertaking and you have fewer choices because of the transverse mount.  You'd be better off buying a diesel vehicle.

In the United States you'd also have problems with emission compliance and state emission testing.
