Land Rover Repair: motor replacement, better luck, junkyard

Question
I am in the need of a replacement motor for a 96 Range Rover 4.0
Motor was run hot, has warped heads, and think the best alternative is to replace. Local mechanic said he could take off heads but he believes rings and or pistons are bad. Has very little compression across the board. Will run, but exhaust and or compression leakage from base of heads to block.

Answer
Our own service department rebuilds motors that were run hot.  We've had better luck doing that than installing junkyard motors.  And it's less expensive than buying a brand new motor from Land Rover.

I suggest complete overhaul or brand new.

I just published a magazine article on rebuilding an overheated motor in a Land Rover.  The article will be available for download here in about a week:
