Auto Parts: Removing Lower Radiator Hose?, radiator hose, petcock

Question
Hello,
In my 1970 Dodge Coronet, I noticed that the lower radiator hose appears to be starting to drip. It looks like it's time I replace that hose as it's over 10 years old.

My question is - is it easier to remove the hose when it's a bit warm (not hot, obviously) so that it will be more pliable?  I remember years ago struggling with stiff hoses and trying to wrestle them off either the radiator or the water pump.  Are there any tricks for easy removal of these old hoses??

Also, would you recommend I first drain all the coolant out of the radiator through the petcock or let it drain directly from the hose?

Thanks very much!!

Answer
Hi Brad,

Drain using the drain plug (petcock). Always replace hoses cool to the touch. Removal is accomplished by using a utility knife and slicing one side of the end of the hose that attaches to both the radiator and the water pump. Twisting frozen hoses to release them may damage the aluminum or brass fittings. If you are unable to easily slide the new hose onto the fittings, wet the ends of the hose with a finger-full of coolant.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
