Land Rover Repair: Land Rover parts, land rover discovery, steering gearbox

Question
My power steering gearbox on my 1998 Land Rover Discovery is leaking and I am searching for a replacement part.  New is too pricey and I am looking for a rebuilt or used one from a salvage yard.  Do you have any suggestions on where to get this part?  I have done a little bit with finding a part online from all over the US.  Can I be sure these are reputable businesses?

Answer
Hi Julie,

yes, I can suggest an excellent site that does all the searching for you:

www.car-part.com

This site can locate Land Rover parts all over Canada and the US.  You enter the year, make and model and the part you are searching for.  Hundreds of reputable salvage yards are connected with this 'search engine' for salvage yards.  I'm very confident you'll find a gearbox replacement at a fraction of the price of original.

I've replaced the power steering pump on my Disco using this service.  I paid $85 for a part that would have cost me $600 or more.  I installed it myself and save another bundle.  Yes, there was Christmas in July!

I took a quick look and found many starting from $50 and as high as $400.

Contact seller, ask about return policy, if they bench test or certify part in any way, shipping costs, etc.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
