Land Rover Repair: Service Engine on 1997 Disco, hi mary, gas cap

Question
My 1997 Discovery has about 85,000 miles.  The Check Engine light came on and I had it serviced.  Less than a week later, the Service Engine light came on - solid red.  I called our local LR service and they said it was just the gas cap didn't get put on tightly, it was okay to drive and the light should go off after closing the cap tightly.  I was surprised they didn't want several hundred more dollars from me and happily accepted their answer :)  Several weeks later, the light still hasn't gone off.  Should I be concerned or should I use the technique at discoweb.org to reset the light?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Mary,

the service engine light (at the 85,000 mile interval) is an emissions examine reminder.  I'm surprised that the dealer did not know this.  Were they too lazy to ask how many miles on your Disco?

Dealers can reset this reminder but it will cost you an hour of labour.  You can find a LR specialist who may do this for much less.

If you are a DIY owner, go to www.discoweb.org and turn to the TECH page.  There is an excellent description of how to reset the emissions reminder (with photos).  You can always have someone else do the work, just print out the Discoweb details.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
