Land Rover Repair: 2001 Land Rover Discovery SE7 Problems, land rover discovery, land rover dealership

Question
Dear John,
My Discovery has 75000 miles currently.  Up until 60000 miles the maintenance was normal, preventative and wear parts(brakes etc)as was considered reasonable.
After 60000 miles has been a different story.
At 60,200 miles I had to replace the head gasket (cost over $2000).  At the same time I was told that my Drive Shaft needed to be replace which I did.
At 67,100 miles I had to replace arcing plug wires, tensioner and jocky pully.
Now at 75000 miles my Land Rover will not move in forward gear and I'm faced with replacing the transmission at a cost of $5100. plus tax.
All of my repairs have been done at the Land Rover Dealership. I have always followed the maintenance service intervals, never taken my Land Rover off road, never towed anything.
Do these repairs seem to excessive?  At this point its hard to pull the trigger and spend $5100 on a transmission, not knowing what other major repairs may be coming.
Any suggestions? With the vehicle being beyond the 4 yr/50000 mile warranty, do I have a legitimate complaint with LRUSA or am I just out of luck (and a vehicle)?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Dave K

Answer
Hi Dave,

all that and you're only at 75Kmiles...ouch.  The other repairs seem normal for a heavy 4x4 with a high combustion/high temp engine.  Drive shaft replacement seems a bit odd but you never know...

Now the transmission...strange.  Don't expect too much help from LRNA...just the usual "that's odd" and "I've never heard of that before".

Tranny failures are very rare and for whatever reason your Disco kicks the norm.  Consider buying a salvaged transmission.   Here's a website that can help you find a salvaged tranny for under $2000.

www.car-part.com

look for one near you.  Most offer 1 year warranty and some even do the install.  Check out some of my previous answers...one fellow Disco owner saved a huge chuck $$$ by going with a salvaged tranny.

I did quick search and found several for under $800 and with low mileage...some even lower than your original.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
