Land Rover Repair: Oil lek and rattling, crankshaft pulley, gasket seal

Question
I have a 93 petrol discovery.  Recently it has developed an oil leak right near the oil filter.  Not sure exactly what the part is, but just above the oil filter a wire goes in and the oil is almost pumping out around the wire while the engine runs.  Also, the Discovery has just begun to rattle while being driven, especially while slowing down or going at lower speeds.  The engine has even died a couple of times, but each time immediately re-starts without a problem.  I was wondering if you could give any suggestions as to the possible problems and approximate costs.

THanks - David

Answer
Hi David,

could be a gasket seal failure on the crankshaft pulley, the large pulley just above the oil filter. Oil leaks down and right on top of the oil filter.

As for an engine rattle noise, I suggest you have it examined by a mechanic.  Could be anything from just valve adjustment to serious internal damage.  Hard to tell from where I'm sitting.  It is mechanical or could it be combustion noises, like a misfire?  Do you have any Check Engine warnings?

Best of luck,

JohnMc
