Land Rover Repair: Engine Light P0174 P0734, maf sensor, vacuum leak

Question
I have 2000 Disco II that I had the diagnostics read when I went to get my emissions tested.
The codes P0174 and P0734 came up. Can you give me any feed back on these before I go to the shop and hear what they have to say. I already had a guy say it sounds like I need a new transmission when I called him! Yikes. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jon,

the two codes are not related to the same problem.  The P0174 refers to a lean condition detected by your oxygen sensor (too much oxygen in the exhaust).  It could be a dirty MAF sensor or a vacuum leak on the downstream side of the MAF.

Clean around the MAF sensor usually clears the problem. Check the air filter and make sure its clean too. Some mechanics remove the MAF and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. The MAF is very expensive so be careful not to damage it and make sure  it's good and dry before reinstalling.

Inspect all the vacuum and PCV hoses, replacing any that are damaged.  You could also check for a dirty fuel filter and make sure you have proper fuel pressure.

The P0734 code suggest that gear 4 does not have the correct ratio.  This may be where the mechanic picked up the transmission problem.  I am not a transmission expert so I suggest you find one.  Perhaps the problem can be repaired without purchasing a new tranny.  A good tranny shop would tell you soon enough.

If you have to purchase a tranny, consider www.car-part.com for a salvaged one.  I know you can find them for a fraction of what the dealer asks. I've sent others to this site and they've saved $1000's.  Most have warranties and do installs.  Its up to you to do the research and determine which is right for you...dealer new, rebuilt or salvaged.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
