Land Rover Repair: 5 speed shifting but not into gear, reverse gears, clutch release

Question
So...the problem is in the transmission. My mechanic told me the main shaft snapped. I did not
see it but he told me that it snapped so perfectly straight that it actually looks like it was
machined to be in two parts! He said he has never before seen that. I'm going to check it out
myself tomorrow. Do you think I might have some recourse with Land Rover. It has 80,000k on it
- but that should not happen right?
OK, so now I'm looking at a HUGE bill with the clutch, tranny et al. He did say that he can rebuild
the transmission as good as new but had difficulty locating the Main shaft by itself - everybody
wants to sell it complete. Any help on this one - where to get a shaft by itself/complete rebuilt/
new - in Long Island New York. Thanks in advance.

Question -
I checked the CV's and locked the differential but no go. Out of
curiosity I was under the car for the first time and was able to get my
hand up high enough to feel where the stickshift comes through the
body of the vehicle - could even see the underside of the rubber boot.
could the stick shift shaft(?) have come disconnected somewhere
"inside" the transmission? Can i remove the center console and rubber
boot to get a look at this area?

Question -
1996 Discovery 5spd. Not going into gear. Shifts through H N L and
also seem to shift through all forward and reverse gears but yet it
does not engage. When attempting reverse I hear a slight click and
when I tried to go forward from 5th it vibrates very slightly on
clutch release but does not move forward either. Car has been
working fine. Any thoughts???

Hi Stephen,

Could it be a CV joint problem?  Just in case, lock your differential and
then try moving your
Disco.

About 2 years ago, I lost my CV joint and the problem I had sounds
alot like your description.  I
locked the diff  and then was able to shift my gears.  I drove my Disco
to the dealership but never
went over 30mph.  You don't want to drive at high speeds with a
locked Diff...you'll burn out
your transmission AND lose your transfer gearbox too!

Best of luck,

Hi Stephen,

Well, you have the clutch, the master and slave cylinder, the R380 manual transmission and the
LT230T transfer gearbox as possible culprits.

Could it be your clutch?  If not, its now in the area of the R380 manual tranny and that's best left
to experts.

Yes, you can remove the console and reveal the shifter gator.  You'll see some bushings and a
nylon seat and the gear lever ball.  To have the best view, you'll have to drop the transmission
and transfer gearbox.  You'll need a special hoist and holding rack.

I've yet to do this myself and, unless you're experienced with this, I'd suggest you tow your Disco
into a tranny shop or (gulp) the dealership.

Best of luck,

Answer
Hi Stephen,

yes, a severed mainshaft is rare.  You can try talking to LR but I doubt they'll do much for a '96 Disco.  If it was a common problem, perhaps...but its rare.

If your looking for parts, consider looking in salvage yards.  Check out the following website and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the parts you can find AND the low price:

www.car-part.com

I did a quick search and found a complete tranny for your '96 Disco for $600.  Beats the dealer's price everytime.  A good tranny shop will strip out the best and rebuild with whats available.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB:  there should be salvage yards closer to you than PA, CT, MD, MA. I saw some listed in Medford and Queensbury, NY.
