Land Rover Repair: 2003 disco II, tick tick, new disco

Question
hoping for your help... i have an 03 disco.  it sounds as if i have a bit of an exhaust leak (tick, tick) on acceleration.  i dont really notice a lack of power (generally assoc w/ valve stick)

is this a possibility, or am i facing the "valve job"

if so, what are the long term problems form continued driving

also please tell me about the fuel treatment, frequency etc.

finally i've got a leak out of the top of my steering box, do you know anywhere to find a rebuilt??

thank you,
blake horton

Answer
Hi Blake,

Does the ticking noise increase when you accelerate?  I would have thought the sticking exhaust valve problem was solved before the '03 model.

Prolonged use could see loss of power, intermittent missing or staggering of the engine when fully warmed up, frequent triggering of Check Engine light, random misfires.  I would worry about my catalytic conv. being forced to deal with this problem...this is not confirmed but it stands to reason that if the exhaust side is not working right...the cats are exposed and vulnerable.

At this point, I would not suspect the valve problem on such a new Disco.  It could be injector related.

You could try www.car-part.com, a salvage yard search engine.  I've used this to buy a replacement PS pump for my '95 Disco.  The salvage yard bench tested the pump before shipping it to me.  Installation was somewhat easy and its worked ever since.  I've seen PS pumps as low as $30 and as high as $200 for your 2003 Disco.
