Land Rover Repair: Antifreeze smell, telltale signs, garage floor

Question
I have a 2001 land rover Disco with about 35000 miles. It runs great and I have had no problems with it. The only thing that has been happening for about the last few months is that when I am sitting with the engine running idle for a couple minutes I start to smell what smells like anti freeze. The car runs fine and it has no problem with over heating or has no problem with heating up. I see no leaks or anything like that . Has anybody had this problem and if so let me know what was wrong with your Disco. Thanks

Answer
Hi Jeremy,

you can have your radiator pressure tested to see if it has any tiny leaks. This can happen over time and leave no telltale signs of a leak in your driveway or garage floor.

After 10 years, my radiator finally failed this past summer.  There was no signs of a leak - at least from the viewing side within the engine compartment.  Once the radiator was removed though, the front side was covered riddled with leaks.  A recore cost me $450.  A new radiator was estimated at $750.

So, have your cooling system pressure tested and at the same time they'll make sure you don't have any air blockages.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
