Land Rover Repair: Disco I Transfer Case, bottom drain, drain plug

Question
Hey John,

Can you tell me where to fill the transfer case on a 96 Disco?  I found a plug that has some sort of sensor with wires, possibly a speedo?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,

the transfer gearbox case on a 96 Disco should be like my '95 Disco.  There are two plugs, one for drainage the other for fillup.  The drain plug is found beside a plate that covers the bottom of the transfer gearbox.  The fillup plug is found on the side of the transfer gearbox.

There should be no plugs or wires on this.  At least there is none on mine.  You use a 1/2 ratchet without a socket to remove the fillup drain plug.  Then remove the bottom drain plug.  I think there's about 2.3 litres of gearoil in there.

If possible, replace the washer on the drain plug. Its soft metal and can leak.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
