Land Rover Repair: discovery window problems, sissor lift, discoweb

Question
John,
the model is a '96 discovery. The front passenger side window
refused to operate, at the same time the front driver's side has
been raising and lowering in a cockeyed position. The first issue
was to deal with the passenger window problem. I started by
reversing the switches in the console to see if i could raise the
passenger side window and use the passenger side switch to
operate the drivers window. The Drivers window operated in
both instances, the passengers did not. I removed the
mechanism for the passenger side and connecteded it to the
drivers side, i was able to operate the mechanism from the
drivers side. So now this led me to believe there must be a relay
somewhere between the console switch and the mechanism. I
believe I have found it under the glove box. Do you believe that
this could be the culprit? Have I missed something? Plus with
both the drivers and passengers window, the sissor lift
mechanism a roller is broken which obviously has caused the
window not to be aligned. Is there a simple fix for this proble or
do I need to replace the whole mechanism? Thank you for you
time,

Bill Ellis

Answer
Hi Bill,

yes, that's the area for the Window ECU.  Here's a website that shows exactly how to find it AND some helpful photos and tips to repair.

http://www.discoweb.org

Select the TECH header and then search for the topic "Rear Window Regulator"...in fact it controls all the windows.

As for the window glass guide, I replaced mine when it failed.  Maybe I should have taken more time to try and repair it but I was in a hurry.  You'll have to remove it to determine if you can fix it or have it replaced.  This is a common problem with most Disco's.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
