Land Rover Repair: Another overheating LR Discovery, fan clutch, fan side

Question
I have a 1995 Landrover Discover that keeps overheating.  I have replaced the thermostat, all the hoses, the fan clutch, and flushed the system.  My mechanic replaced the whole exhaust system because he said that that could be contributing to the problem.  Many dollars later its still overheating.  Can you help?

Answer
Hi Nick,

you're in luck.  Two months ago, I was having the same problem with my '95 Disco.  I replaced the thermostat, flushed the coolant but the gauge still rose above the usual middle position.  Eventually, it overheated and began to boil over and vent steam.

Turns out that the radiator was long overdue for a recore job.  Vents were good on the fan side BUT were corroded and like paper on the leeward side (facing the front).  I took it to a radiator specialist who rebuilt the rad (even added an additional layer - now has 4) and it cost me $400.

Temperature returned to normal, even a bit below that.  I guess you could try to pressure test the rad but if its original...time to have it rebuilt.  New one is very expensive.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
