Land Rover Repair: I recently purchased a 1996..., land rover discovery, drive shaft

Question
I recently purchased a 1996 Land Rover Discovery and had it checked by my mechanic before purchase.  All looked good, but I did not take it over about 50 miles an hour in test driving it (my mistake). After the first time over 50 I began to hear a whining noise at acceleration.  It now occurs at any speed over about 30 mph.  I have taken it to my mechanic, who sent me to a drive shaft specialist.  They used a stethoscope and seem to feel that the problem is in the passenger side carrier bearing.  Could this be the source of the problem, and if so what should I expect to fix, and at what cost?

Answer
Hi Matt,

anything is possible on older Disco's.  I've not had this problem with my '95 but I've had axle and CV joint work performed.  If its just a bearing, the part may run as high as $100 plus labour.

I've had axle work and its cost me $2500 not counting towing.

If it was a wheel bearing I'd say go ahead and fix this yourself but its not.  It involves the drive shaft and you'll want a specialist to take care of this.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
