Land Rover Repair: 99 discovery, rust paint, windshield glass

Question
Hello again John,
I have a new problem.  My windshield is leaking in like 3 places.  Only when it rains really hard though.  Do I have to get a new windshield?  It is typhoon season, so I need to try and do something right away.  Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Jackie,

almost all LandRovers have problems with water ingress.  Water leaks can be associated with the rubber trims around the windshield and even the sealant used for the windshield glass.

I just have to wash my Disco and water manages to leak into the passenger footwell...imagine Guam during the rainy season!

What I suggest is to go to a windshield repair shop and have them reseal your glass.  They'll remove the exterior trim and lift out the windshield, lay a new 'bed' of sealant and reinstall the windshield.  Have them use extra sealant around the glass and explain that this is a common problem with Land Rovers.  While you are there, have them also re-seal both alpine windows too!  They are known to leak into the rear of the Disco.

When my Disco had a rock smash into the windshield, I had the shop "Glass Doctor" use the best sealant they had AND I made them use lots of it!  I wanted no leaks after the install of a new windshield.  They told me that there was lots of rust around the frame and that it had to be repaired before the new windshield was installed.

So be prepared for rust...don't re-install the windshield until that rust is removed and the area is touched up with any type of rust resistant paint.  I doubt you will ever see the area so you can use just about any rust paint that matches closely to the colour of your Disco.

Best of luck, Jackie!
