Land Rover Repair: 1997 Discovery wont turn over, electrical surges, arc welding

Question
Hi John, I have a 97 Disco and it left me stranded for the first time last week.  I went to start it and the motor turned over for maybe 1/2 a revolution then stopped.  Now it won't turn over at all.  When I turn the key to the start position, the elec. fan kicks on and sometimes the security system goes off (lights and horn.)  There is no noise of anykind (other than the fan) when I turn the key to the start position.  The battery seems ok but I have had people tell me that sometimes a dead cell can play games with the computer.  Any ideas?  Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer
Hi Jason,

when you try to start the engine, do you hear the starter motor turning?  Of all the noises, this is the most important.  If you don't hear that noise, have your battery tested.  Advance auto can do this for free.

Usually, the ECM is well protected from electrical surges and unless you are using an ARC welding kit on your vehicle, the ECM should be ok.

It does not take much 'juice' to turn over the electrical fan, however, a solid battery is needed for that small starter motor.

So forget the ECM and focus on either the battery strength of the condition of your starter.  IF the starter is at fault, it can drain off the battery very quickly.  If you can boost start your Disco..its your battery.  IF not, its your starter.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
