Land Rover Repair: Window switch, auto electrician, window switches

Question
I have a 2000 Discovery both back window switches seem to have stop working.I tried the main switch in the front but it doesn't work from there either, what do you think the problem could be?

Answer
Hi Erik,

this is a common problem with LandRover's.  It can be the window actuator motor, corroded wiring, the switches, the windown ECU.  Some owners have simply replaced the ECU (found in the side panel of the passenger footwell) and it seems to fix the problem.  You'll have to either take the time to isolate the problem or pay to have someone do it for you.

If it was just one window that was causing the problem, it could be just a switch, however, both rear windows leaves me to think its the window ECU or MFU.

If you really want to solve this problem (once and for all), take your Disco to an auto electrician and have him rewire the windows AWAY from the ECU altogether!  They can wire it such that you can operate the windows anytime you want (ignition on or off) and it won't drain your battery.  If I had some spare dollars, that's exactly what I'd do.  I don't believe the ECU would complain and cause your Disco to trigger any alarms or refuse to start.

OTHERWISE, you'll be dogging this problem for as long as you own the vehicle.  The problem is that substantial and I've seen it in my 1995 right up to model year 2004. Maybe they've fixed it in the LR3...not sure at this point. It makes me angy when I think about it.  My neigbours KIA does not have this problem.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
