Land Rover Repair: 98 4.0 SE Service Engine Light, electronic fuel injection, fuel injection system

Question
John, Looked thru your previous answers but none worked for the 98 Range Rover 4.0 SE that I own.  Like the manual says, the red "Service Engine" light came on at 82,500 for emissions service.  How can I reset this without going to the dealer?  I looked in the passenger footwell for the example you gave on a '96 Discovery but the Emissions Maint Module isn't there.  Any help you can give would be great!
Thanks so much,
Joel

Answer
Hi Joel,

the reset procedure you mention is for Disco's only.  For your Rangie, here is what I found for you:

It looks like Rangies require either the Testbook or a OBDII reader to reset the Service Engine code.  I read somewhere about a reset sequence that involved the ECU.  KNOWING how expensive the ECU is on any LR, I'd stay away from resetting the ECU.  That same procedure stated that Rangie emissions reset modules were located beside the ECU under the passenger seat.  Have a look.  The process for resetting CHECK ENGINE and SERVICE ENGINE lights in Rangies is very confusing (changed sometime after 199x) and what was once a CHECK ENGINE code is now the SERVICE ENGINE code.  Your Emissions reminder is part of the SERVICE ENGINE light, that is for sure, and your only option is to have a dealer reset this for you.

FOR 4.0/4.6 Models:

On the 4.0/4.6, the Check Engine light also acts as a signal that a fault has been detected in the electronic fuel injection system.  Unfortunately the GEMS models (1995-98) have non-volatile memories so the condition cannot be reset by disconnecting the battery. To discover what the fault is, and reset the light, you need to access the engine ECU using a scan tool such as the dealer's Testbook or an OBD-II compatible analyzer. Inexpensive versions of the latter can now be obtained for under $200.
