Land Rover Repair: Land Rover, range rovers, suspension system

Question
----------FOLLOW-UP Thanks John - good advice.  He said if could be the software slab and those are put in to a car and they are VIN # specific, so it sounds like a risk to go that route if they are not sure that is the problem?  He has not used the words compressor, he says something is telling that "valve" to deflate"  I dont want to spend money if they cannot tell me what it could be - what is the swap parts program?

My 99 Land Rover Disco is in the shop, problem is stumping the staff.  Every 4 or 5 times you stop the car the back left rear of the car lowers.  They cannot find a leak in a bag.  They tried to re-set the software, and it still goes down.  It only lowers itself when the car is NOT running, and when you start it, it raises the back left level to its appropriate level for driving immediatly.  They do not know what to test next and are suggesting I maybe need a whole new computer "slab" Im not sure what that is??

Hi Doug,

that suspension system is a real pain.  I'm not sure if LR was dumping the Rangies problem into the laps of Disco owners but it sure looks like it.  Give me coil and shocks any day.

Could be computer related but could also be compressor.  I've seen Range Rovers with a similar problem and it turned out to be the compressor.

Don't get into a swap and "we'll see" with this mechanic.  It could cost you a bundle!  Have them swap parts as a testing measure only.  If it works...good...if not...swap it back and try something else.  If you don't do this, your service bill will look like a small mortgage.

Hi Doug,

Some dealerships will resort to swapping out parts to see if if fixes the problem, IF NOT, the continue to swap parts until the problem is fixed.  The trouble is that perfectly good parts are tossed out and you pay for them!  I see this when owners complain that service was done and a few days later the problem returns.

A '99 Disco owner who had attempted to transport hardwood flooring in his air suspension Disco had this to say about his rear end trouble:

"The compressor is situated under the front passenger door on the chassis. A very common problem with these is that the air bag gets a leak. You can check this with soapy water if you cn get some air in the bag. If it's the valve then you could try and swap the hoses over and see if it cures tha side (you will when you take the cover off)"

He suggests that maybe the trouble could be swapped to the other side, if so, you've found your trouble.

Best of luck,
