Land Rover Repair: window control unit, salvage yard, controller unit

Question
I have had repeated problems with the electrical windows both front and back in my '95 Disco.  I have been told that there may be a problem with a controller unit that apparently controls all of the windows.  I have replaced the fuses only to have them blown in a few days.  I noticed that there is a window switch ECU.  Is that the primary suspect, and how do I know if that is what I really need?  If I buy it and try it and it doesn't work, can I return it?

Answer
Hi Robert,

I too have a '95 Disco with window ECU problems.  Yes, this is a very common problem with Series I Disco's, the chances are that if you buy the part and have it installed, the problem will be resolved.

In your case, if you purchase the part and it turns out that you have another problem, let's say corroded wires, you may have difficulty returning the part.  Electronic components are difficult to return, whether its for automotive, computer, ...  Now if the part is not the correct unit and you did not install it, you may be entitled to a refund.

The trouble with electronic components, the parts dept. does not know if the part was damaged during the installation process.

What you might be able to do, if you are on good terms with the dealership, is ask to have a used part to test out your theory.

Better yet, why not try a local wrecker (salvage yard) and get the part for around $50.  Try it out and if it works then decide to either keep the used part or purchase a new one (that would last longer - we hope).

Best of luck,

JohnMc
