Land Rover Repair: Rear Electric Windows, salvage yard, rear windows

Question
John - You'll not believe this, but this evening I took the switch panel out, unplugged all the window switches, plugged the rear wire harness into the front switch - the rear windows worked!

I then put the whole panel back together in the proper order and all the windows now work - real weird!  Must be one of those electrical problems, when you unplug adnd then plug it back in - it works!

Question -
1997 Discovery SE7.  The rear electric windows just stopped working - fortunately they were closed.  I press the buttons and there is absolutely nothing - no noise or movement.

I've swapped over the 30A fuses (front and rear windows) and nothing happened and also checked most of the other fuses and they were fine.

If it is the relay - where do I find it?

Thanks for any assistance on this matter

Hi Kevin,

this is a very common problem with series I Disco's.  My own '95 Disco has had this type of problem for the last couple of years.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.  Usually when its raining out and/or just before entering the on-ramp of a highway.

I have been planning to purchase a window ECU unit from a local salvage yard (wrecker).  www.car-part.com is my first stop when purchasing used parts for my Disco.

For $50 you can probably find one to swap in.  If it works, the money spent confirms your theory and you can either keep the used one or spend some more and buy the new one with peace of mind!

Best of luck,

Answer
Hi Kevin,

so you simply disconnected the switches and swapped the wiring from the rear windows to the front switches (same with front to rear)?

That is strange.  So strange, I'll try this out myself.

As I write, my front passenger window is refusing to close once it is open.  I don't have an explanation for this other than the "poltergist" theory of Lucas electronics.

I hope it lasts!  If not, just swap them back to original position...

Thanks for the follow up, Kevin.  I'll pass this along whenever able.

Regards,

JohnMc
