Land Rover Repair: Air Conditioning, air condtioning, cable wires

Question
John,
I just bought a 2000 LR discovery and when I drove it off
the lot everything was working fine.  Today I noticed the air
condtioning blower wasn't blowing.  When the car is
moving cold air comes out of the vents so I figured it was
the just the blower.  I've checked the fuses listed on the OM
that say they control the blower but they seem to be fine.
Do you have any suggestions for easy fixes i.e. loose wires
etc would  be helpful.
Thanks,
Ted

Answer
Hi Ted,

If you have no blower fan and the fuses are ok, it could be either the blower itself or the blower switch.  Either way, you would have to open up your dashboard to test out the blower.

I've seen the switch fail on my Disco and compared to working on the blower, the switch is somewhat easier.  The difficulty arises when you remove the A/C heater cover and expose the control unit.  Most of the wires are in behind the control unit and (at least on my older 95 Disco) directional cable wires that need to be disconnected.  If they're damaged it could be costly.  The control unit has be be pulled out and only then can the switch be fully tested.  If it is the switch, the dealer told me that the entire unit has to be replaced.  Its possible that you could do this but it is tedious work usually best left to someone familiar with the wiring - a LR mechanic.

If its the blower, at least on mine, it requires removing some the central dashboard to get access to. Not an easy job!  There is also access from the engine compartment. I really hope its not your blower motor.  This is not a project that I would want to tackle alone.

My suggestion is to have your dealer service this.  It will be expensive but you'll have A/C and heat when you need it.

Best of luck with this,

JohnMc
