Land Rover Repair: Starting, spark plug wires, engine cranks

Question
John,

Thank you for your response.  This starting problem occurs all the time and is not effected by the weather.  I did a tune-up on the car, but no change in the problem; however, I did not use genuine parts...maybe I should.  Will this effect the charging system?

"Many years ago, I had a problem with my coil and spark amplifier module.  I think the coil failed and caused my SAM to fail as well."  I am not familiar with these components...any additional details will help.

One other source I heard could be the problem is the fuel cutoff temp switch on the intake manifold (if it's bad it will kill the fuel pump??)  Could this be the problem?  Since pumping the pedal gets it started, perhaps I am artificially working the fuel pump.

Again, you help is greatly appreciated.

I am having trouble starting 95 LR Discovery.  Engine cranks several(8) times and will only start after pushing pedal to floor or pumping gas pedal rapidly.  Without pumping pedal, the engine will never start; it will continue to crank.  Once engine starts, strong gasoline odor outside of car.  Thank you.

Hi Brian,

does this happen all the time?  I've had trouble like this on very humid days when I first start up my '95 Disco.  Many years ago, I had a problem with my coil and spark amplifier module.  I think the coil failed and caused my SAM to fail as well.  Regardless, LR swapped these two components out and the Disco started from then on.

This spring, I've noticed some mornings (rainy days) the Disco has a hard time to start.  Could be the spark plug wires need to be changed.

In your case, at least you know your starter is ok and that your fuel injectors are working.  I think its just the spark is not enough.  When was the last time you had a tune up?  New wires, plugs could make a difference.  Have your distributor cap and rotor replaced (especially if they are original parts!).

Lastly, have your charging system tested.  Most local garages can do this unless you only use the LR dealer.  Local garages should be able to do this sooner and not as expensive as dealer.

Best of luck,

Hi Brian,

I think your problem is more firing than fuel delivery.  You stated that after several attempts you smell fuel...so up to that point, the air/fuel portion of ignition is present.  What is needed is spark.  The ECU controls the spark from various sensors, this much is true. The coil sits just beside the radiator and is used to generate the high ignition to distributor.  There is a high voltage wire that leads from the coil to the centre of the distributor.

What you have to do is determine if you are having any spark and how strong the spark is.  If you have a timing gun, it would help. Local garages could help you there.

Its also possible that the Throttle Position Sensor on our Disco can affect the engine.  I've had mine replaced ($500+).

Without the right tools, I'd stay away from the high leads as you could damage other components.  The ECU alone is $3000.  Its located far from the engine BUT a misdirected charge travels far!

I'd have a mechanic do a general ignition inspection to see what components are not working.  So far, it does not sound that expensive - for a LR.

Best of luck,
