Land Rover Repair: TD5 crankshaft, leaking radiator, turner engineering

Question
Hi John i recently purchased a 2000 Disco 2 It has every problem imaginable Wiring harness, rear air bellows, leaking radiator, thermostat, blown headgasket etc etc....(my poor selction on a used vehicle to blame) Non the less i have decide to overhaul the motor due to its exessive oil consumption as a result off the engine sucking dust now we know why the previous owner has sold it.
My problem finally is that the crankshaft has some deep score marks on some of the journals & according to the dealer you are not allowed to machine the crank.
However i have consulted on this with numerous sources & have recieved various opinions.
Most parts suppliers say that on the Landrover parts disc there is a part no for .010" bearings
But landrover say the crank is nitrite coated & cant be machined.(But why do they have undersized bearings available on their parts catalogue?)
A well respected machinist in my area tells me nitrite coating is 0.020" deep so to cut it 0.010" it would not make any difference to the integrity of the crankshaft.
Should it be nitrite coated then surely once i have cut the crank i can have it recoated?
Turner engineering also seemed of the opinion that if they have undersized bearings available then you can cut the crank.
What is your opinion?
Kind Regards
Garrick Steyn

Answer
Good machine shops repair nitride hardened cranks all the time.  We do it here.  I don't know about the availability of 10 under bearings because we don't see those engines in the usa, but you could weld the crank over, and cut it back to stock, and re-harden it if needed.
