Land Rover Repair: Distributor Drive, distributor cap, rotor

Question
John,

Whilst changing my distributor cap and rotor recently I pulled the rotor off the shaft and the shaft moved upwards out of it's seat about .25". I replaced the rotor and the shaft can now rotate through about 90 degrees but at one point will "click" into position. Now however, the vehicle will not start as if the timing is completely wrong. I have the leads attached identically to the way the were prior to changing the cap! Help

Answer
Hi Mark,

oh boy...this could be a problem.  When you pulled up on the shaft to remove the rotor cap, you may have shifted a clip or o-ring.  I'm not sure from here.

If you are able, I could send you a breakdown diagram of your distributor (LUCAS 35 DLM8 V8i).  You may have to remove the dist. and dismantle it to see what is wrong.

Many years ago, I had to break open a distributor to replace the shaft cog that became stripped.  Its not too difficult but you have to take your time.

It is possible that you're timing is out of sync.

If you had marked the distributor before hand, you would know the exact original position.  IF the engine is turned over while distributor is not aligned properly, usually a complete ignition timing procedure is required.

Here is my email address: jmcinnis64@hotmail.com

IF you want some more data, including some diagrams, send me an email and I'll forward some notes that may help you.  Otherwise, you'll need the expertise of a local mechanic to reset the dist. and timing.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
