Land Rover Repair: Windows/Cruise Control, vacuum problem, vacuum lines

Question
Two questions, maybe two issues.  I have a 95 Disco and the rear windows will not come down.  The cruise control also does not work.  I get a yellow indicator light when I depress the cruise control on switch, but the steering wheel controls do not work, so it won't engage.  Are these related electrical issues or seperate issues?  The guy we bought it from did say that the dash had been off when he got it at auction.  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Wes,

There is a security device called the immobiliser unit that is found in behind your dashboard.  As you indicated, someone may have been trying to work on this device.  The only way to work on it is by removing the dashboard - a long and difficult job.

As for the cruise control, I'd suspect a vacuum problem first.  On '95s this was a common problem.

The rear windows are controlled by the window control unit that is linked to the security.  Again, this problem is quite common with early series I Disco's.

My '95 Disco windows work only when they feel like it.  Its very fustrating to be able to lower your windows and then moments later have no power to raise them.  This can happen at any time and under the worst conditions.  I have resorted to not opening them.

So to answer your question, this is a case of two separate problems and both are to be expected.

Have your Disco's vacuum lines tested then consider testing the cruise control component and switch.

The rear windows will have to be tested to determine if the problem is with the motor, the lifting arm, the console switch, the door switch, the window master control unit or perhaps the 'spider'. The immobiliser (or Spider) can repaired by replacement.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
