Land Rover Repair: Voltage regulator, auto wreckers, salvage yard

Question
I have read your previous postings about the land rover alternators...I as well am now looking at my fourth in 110k miles..I have several questions...is there another make/model alternator which will work on my 97 disco?
.......does anyone make an alternator set up to accomodate the heavier load the truck requires?
.......what generally goes in the unit...the voltage regulator? condensor? I know the regulator is easy to replace even though it is inside the unit.its like my 74 jag...cap odd the back and its right there..any sources for the repair parts if I want to do the voltage reg myself.

Thankls for all the good information on the site.

Answer
Hi Dirk,

I've looked for replacement alts.  BOSCH offers one that you could consider.  Meanwhile, I've learned to rebuild mine after the last time one of the bearings ceased.  Finding minute parts for this Italian alternator is very difficult.  I needed new brushes and tried several sources but with no luck.  The best I can do is search online for salvage yard (auto wreckers) and pickup some $30 alternators.  I'll cannabalize them and use the parts when needed.

The problem with the Marelli alt is that it has to be carefully dismantled in order to be serviced.  Take your time and keep any solder away from the rotor wiring.  Mark the alt before you disassemble for easier reassembly.

I found the bearings, brushes and voltage regulator are seriously lacking in my alts.  Having a spare ensures that I have at least these three areas covered...just in case.

Search the internet using www.car-part.com for Disco parts, specifically alternator.  Large selection of yards in both Canada and the US.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
