I have a 2000 DII with 95000 miles. The service engine light goes on and off, and I fear my problem may actually be several problems. A recent service visit revealed occasional misfires from cylinder 5, but the dealer could not find anything to fix. I have heard only an occasional misfire (maybe 3 times total over several weeks), the acceleration is weak in the 25 to 45 mph range and is associated with a shake, and at high speeds it surges. I fear that part of your answer is going to be "it's gonna cost ya," and that is ok, but my dealer has not realy gained my trust, so I am interested if you know what the problem is.

Hi Scott,
I am aware of a serious problem with series II Disco's and sticking exhaust valves. This may be the cause of your woes. In order to verify this, LR would have to open up your engine and determine if this is true. At least you have cyl. 5 to start with.
I have heard that most series II discos have this problem and it usually surfaces around 50,000 miles. Your Disco is newer and perhaps it is just starting. A valve job is often the remedy (about $2000US) and there is little you can do to avoid this. Additives to fuel won't affect the exhaust side.
If you are able, find another dealership and get a second opinion. In cases like this, you should stay with mechanics that know LR's and Disco's specifically. More experienced mechanics should find the fault faster.
