Land Rover Repair: suspension/engine, shock absorber, general mechanic

Question
I had reciently asked a question about the noise under the vehicle and the whining in the engine. I had brought it to a machanic and they said that everything under the vehicle was tight but he had metioned that it may be a shock clunk in the inside. the whining in the engine had reciently when i got home gone away but it was really cold the night before and I think that may have done something but that is just a guess. I also can't lock the differntial but it will go in low gear but not the locked low gear.so i really want some leaway on how to solve this. thanks

Answer
Hi Colm,

If your suspension is 'tight' enough for the general mechanic, I would imagine his guess that it could have been a shock absorber 'hit'. If this noise happens again, I'd have your shocks examined for leakage.

The whining sound could be just your serpentine belt tightening up on the pulley - due to the very cold temperatures that you mentioned.

As for locking in your diff...I hope you are familiar with how to perform this correctly.  IF this is so, and you still cannot lock the diff into low, you may have a linkage problem that only a LR mechanic can resolve. When it comes to gearbox and differential, I'd leave it with a professional who knows exactly what he is doing.  Unless the mechanic you are seeing has direct experience with LR diffs, I'd bite the bullet and take your Disco to a LR dealer.

Best of luck,
