Volvo Repair: abs/stc fault, wheel speed, diagnostic fee

Question
just got a fault message saying abs/stc needs service.
i have a s80 2.4 6 years old.
i have checked brake pads and electical connections, could this be one of the sensors on the wheel and if so how can i find which one is giving the fault.
please help

Answer
The most common problem with that particular car is the ABS module itself will fail.  It registers a fault in the pump motor circuit or the wheel speed sensor logic that doesn't exist.  The good new is, if that is the problem and the car is 2001 or older then you can replace it yourself.  If it is newer than that the dealer will have to program it for you.  The part is fairly expensive ($600-900US) so you may want to have the dealer confirm that first for a small diagnostic fee.  Hope that helps.
