Land Rover Repair: Discovery 200 Tdi overheating....again, discovery 200, radiator cap

Question
Hi! When i bought the Disco, it had 225 000 km, and i asked about the timming belt, wich i was told it was changed in the previous scheduled maintenence.

Just after 10 000 km, the belt broke when i was in the freeWay, at 100 km/h....but the dealer repaired all the damage (still under warranty).

Another 15 000 km, and quite a lot of sand and mud, when returning in the HiWay, at aprox. 140 km/h, the engine started to make strange noises, and i imideatly stoped by the side....suddenly, lots of smoke, but all the gauges were reading "normal"....???.

Well, the engine overheated, and one cilinder was melted inside the chamber, the crankshaft was bent, as well as the valves, and we foud that the engine was rebored twice...so we went for a "new" used engine.

The problem with that engine is still a mistery, since it builded up pressure enough to blow out one of those caps (core plugs?) on the block, just below the exaust pipe....

We found one in a scrapyard just outside Lisbon, below a ton of rusty metal...forgonten since 1994, when it went in with just 47 000 km!

It looked quite good, and after a wash, it looked new. Inside, the timming gears were really like new, and it came with injection pump, turbo, PAS box and clutch.

Monday (November 1st), after another trip to Oporto (were everithing went fine), when returning, just after 150 km at 120 km/h, it blew a hose, that one that returns the water from the heater matrix to the block, on the block side, an once again, i heard a stange noise and pulled over, with all gauges readding "normal", and when stopped, the somke from the engine appeared.

Sinde it is the second time this problem happens, and apparrently it's not engine related, wath else could be malfunctioning to cause an "undetected" overheating??

to my knowledge, the thermostat and radiator cap had been changed.

Can you give me any hints?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Christian,

the root of this problem could be one of the various sensors on your Disco.  It could be a sensor on the ZF box that does not trigger a fault correctly thus causing the drivetrain and engine to overheat.  Temperature sensors that fail could be the true cause of you woes.

I would have all of your sensors tested to protect your engine from the same fate as the original engine.  Seems like the problem never actually went away.  Maybe the same sensor is still causing the problems.  A poorly functioning tranny could cause all sorts of problems for the engine.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
