Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Breaks, master cyl, abs light

Question
Hello. I have a 1994 Land Rover Disco, 3.9, V-8, Automatic. My problem is with the breaks. From time to time the Anti Lock light comes on, then it will go off, and the break padal gets "squishy", then kicks back, and it doesn't  seem like I am going to stop. We've changed the pads, bled the breaks, checked rotors and calipers, but they seem fine. Any suggestions PLEASE! Thanks,
Patti

Answer
Hi Patti,

The ABS light is a problem we all share.  I never know if it's a failing sensor, corroded electrical connectors or the ABS toothed plate that is worn.  Some owners have told me that badly worn pads or rotors can trigger the ABS light.  In your case, that theory falls apart.

As for the sponge pad sensation, it could be air the master cylinder or even a master cyl. fault.  You should have the master cyl. bench tested and  bled.  Poor braking in your case is probably due to a problem with the master cyl.

There is a technique for bleeding the brake lines that I have heard about:

1. Passenger rear
2. Driver's front
3. Driver's rear
4. Passenger front

Best of luck,
