Land Rover Repair: 1996 Disco I Land Rover A/C problems, auto wrecker, vent air

Question
(1)  Occasionally my vent air blower will stop (1-2 sec) and restart automatically.  Once or twice the A/C compressor has shut down (clutch disengaged?).  How can I fix this?
(2)  My Disco A/C is cool but not cold.  I checked the suction pressure of my compressor and found it to be 45 psig with front air only.  With both front & rear, the pressure jumps to 55 psig.  With rear only, 65 psig.  Can I get the A/C cooler?  Is the pressure changes normal?

Answer
Hi Chris,

you have two problems here.  The first is the A/C Heater blower control.  I have this problem in my '95 Disco.  I was told to replace the control unit and it should be resolved.  I am considering to buy this used from an auto wrecker...about $75.  OEM would be close to $400

The second problem is your compressor.  We share the same compressor and I was told that the switch inside the compressor eventually burns out.  There is no way to replace this switch and the entire compressor must be purchased (about $1000).

This summer, while in Miami, I had an electrician by-pass the switch and feed 12 volts directly to the compressor motor.  My AC was fantastic...however, I had to open the hood to 'hot wire' the AC to work.  Only solution is to purchase a new or used compressor.  ouch.

If you are in the states, you might be able to resupply the AC coolant with R134a.  Most auto parts shops have these kits.  I was told that as the switch fails, the compressor slowly leaks out the R134.  Advance Auto can set you up the kit you need to refill the R134a and I suggest you consider a used replacement from a reputable wrecker.  Usually comes with 30 day to 1 year warranty.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
