Land Rover Repair: revs itself, throttle position sensor, sensor tps

Question
1994 2.0 mpi manual petrol discovery.
please help, my mechanic is lost on this one, he has checked all he can with no result. My disco is revving by itself, it will tick over at the correct idle speed and then evey 10 sec it will rev up and drop back to normal. I thought maybe it was sucking in air, but checked. I put carb cleaner in, but no joy. could it be electical, faulty sensor? please help

Answer
Hello John,

have your mechanic check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and then, if possible, reprogram your ECU.

I had this very problem and the dealer spent almost $3000 looking for the trouble.  On the final visit, they changed the TPS and then 'reprogramed'* the ECU.  That did the trick!  It was about $500.

Best of luck,

*Reprogramed?  More like reset.
