Answer
Hi Graham,

Here is what I understand from your message:

You have '96 2.5 TD Disco.  You had a flat (tire) and when you jacked up (o/s/f ?), you noticed that the hub is HANGING OFF (?) with 2 inches of of play on top and bottom.

Is this right?

If its the hub half axle (not sure if front or rear) you may be able to repair it but you are opening a pandora's box.  You'll have to open it up to see what is damaged - IF IT IS DAMAGED.  It could be bearing problems.  It could be a damaged threads on the half-axle. It could be that it has worked itself loose and needs to be tightened.  Did someone do some work in this area recently?

You'd be better off taking it to a dealer and having them inspect it.  Get an estimate (may cost you 1 or 2 hours labour).  Read the estimate and then determine if you can perform the work.

Replacing a half-axle is possible for a DIY owner, so is some of the bearing work.  CV, swivel or differential work is specialized and should done with correct tools and expertise.

I wish you luck on this.
