Land Rover Repair: Disco 1 (1998) Wipers wont park, Intermittant mode stops in random places, linkage system, random positions

Question
Probably a bad motor? Is the motor difficult to remove and replace? Tips would be appreciated. I think I have found a donor vehicle.

Answer
Hello Mike,

You have lots of work on your Disco...I hope this helps.

Check to see if the arm of your wiper is tightly bolted to the linkage nut.   I noticed on mine that the aluminum threads are wearing down.  I removed the wiper arm, scored the exposed hub or 'bolt' of the linkage and then installed the wiper arm in its resting position.  I then screwed the nut tightly and ensured the arm was not moving.

You may have to run the wipers a few times to make sure the arm is not loosening up AND that it is in the correct resting position.

If this this not the case and your wiper arm is stopping in random positions or not moving at all, you'll have to replace the linkage.  Its large, about 2 feet long, and awkward to install.  You may have to purchase an adapter for the linkage.  Ask your dealer if this is necessary.  My '95 Disco I needed this linkage adapter...maybe your newer '98 has the newer wiper linkage system.

Best of luck on your projects,

JohnMc
