Land Rover Repair: Land Rover 4x4 trouble, prop shaft, rangie

Question
Hi John
I recently purchased a 1989 Range Rover as a project. After some checking I realized that the front axles do not seem to engage. I jacked the vehicle up (all four corners) and discovered that the front prop shaft spins however no motion at the tires? Also no unusual noise?? Any idea of where the trouble could be. I have not disassemble the differential as of yet. That was going to be my first step?
Any help??
Ed

Ed: As I mentioned, it could be a front differential.  A few owners pointed out that it could be a half shaft or even a CV joint problem.  Its possible for the half shaft but I doubt the CV is at fault.  I could be wrong but since you reported that there is no notable noise, I'd say it's most likely the differential.

You'll need to strip down the front axle to find out where the breakage is.  You can first start by pulling the hub off and the stub axle and seeing if it's all intact there, followed by the inner shafts.  If its ok then your'll need to bring down your differential and open it up for examination.

sounds like your differential is not engaging.  Let me ask around and see what you can do for your Rangie.  I'm a Discovery owner and I don't want to make any errors with my advice to you.  On my Disco, I have a 2nd gear changer that co-ordinates how the diff is used.  I'm not sure if your '89 model engages the diff the same way as mine

Hang-in there!  I'll send you a followup soon...
