Lexus Repair: Lexus ls 400 1991 ABS System Bad, lexus ls 400, toyota lexus

Question
When I start the car, the anti-lock light is not on.  After I hit the brakes the first time, the car begins to skid and I think the ABS is pulsating the brakes.  It is very scary because I cannot stop within a reasonable distance and the car normally swerves or slides out from under me.  After a few times of hitting the brakes, sometimes just one time, sometimes quite a few; the anti-lock brake light turns on in the dash and the car works fine from then on.  All pads and rotors are new.  I think the light means the car has turned the ABS system off.  I am tempted to just pull the fuse on the ABS so that I can start the car with the ABS disabled and wont run the risk of getting into a crash the first time I brake.  Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes of braking to get the light to go on. Tonight, in fact, the light was on, then it turned off for a second and it momentarily skided when I was trying to stop at a red light.  I had to turn right instead because I couldnt stop in time.  It is very scary and the dealer told me it was $2,000 for a new ABS unit, I dont have that kind of money so I was hoping you could tell me where the fuse is or what I should do.
Thank you very much

Answer
Hello, A good place to start is your owners manual which should have a section on fuses. I am not sure that you will find one just for that but you may. You can also look for a connector at the abs unit to disconnect. This is the first that I have heard of one going bad in 23yrs of working on Toyota/Lexus but it does sound like that is your problem.
