Lexus Repair: car wont start, lexus ls 400, battery problem

Question
I have a 1998 lexus ls 400 and the car clicks almost like the battery not getting a good connection and the check vsc lites on

Answer
Chris,

Thanks for the question.

Here is a great way to tell if you have a true electrical problem in the starting system, or just a weak or nearly dead battery:

Turn the headlights on, then stand safely out of the way, where you can watch the headlights while someone turns the key in the igntion (as if they were trying to start the car.)

If the headlights dim or go out while trying to start the engine, then the battery is history, or at least badly discharged.  When recharging or replacing the battery, make sure you have the charging system inspected.

If the headlights don't dim, then there is a problem in the starter circuit.  Then the situation calls for a qualified technician to diagnose and repair.

One of the diagnostic codes for VSC is a warning that system voltage is too low.  This would make sense if the battery is near or completely dead.  I wouldn't worry about the VSC warning light unless it comes on or stays on after the battery problem is resolved.

Hope that helps.
