Lexus Repair: Lexus RX 300, lexus rx 300, rx300

Question
My wife and i own a 2000 RX 300 and she was driving it recently and it just cut off. When you try to start it all it does is spin as if it does not get any compression. I believe its the timing belt(it has 145,000 miles). My question is i've been told that you cant just replace the belt and that there may been engine damage. Do you think i will have to replace the engine or can the belt be replaced. I really just need the vehicle to be started so i can decide my next option. Any suggestions or advice PLEASE.

Answer
tony, this model of rx300 has a non-interference motor. which means that if the belt breaks, it will not cause the valves to hit the pistons. there may be a idler brg, tensioner brg that is bad, but usually those are replaced with the belt. also the water pump may have caused the belt to go south. a lot of times the water pump is also replaced when the belt is replaced. find another shop, kind of like a second opinion when it comes to you're health.someone who is very knowledgeable with lexus or toyota. bottom line you were given the wrong info.this situation is not as bad as it sounds. good luck.
