Lincoln/Mercury Repair: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, 1999 mercury cougar, mercury cougar

Question
I have a 1999 Mercury Cougar that runs great. However, the check engine light will not go off. I've read many online complaints from owners who have said they have te same problem and nothing can be done. they've spent thousands of dollars replacing everything and none of it resolved the issue. Is this a very common problem with these cars (the cougar) and is there a fix?

Answer
Hi Jae,

The check engine light is triggered by one or more of dozens of DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) being stored in the car's computer. Take it to a place that can scan the data and you should have an easy fix. Cottman Transmissions will do this for free. Of course, knowing what to do with the data is key to a successful repair. After you have your car scanned, re-submit me with the DTCs and we will get this fixed for you. Hope this helps.
