Mazda Repair: Air Bag Light is constantly on, auto safety hotline, air bag deployment

Question
My 1996 Miata's air bag light is constantly on.  It does not blink at all. Tks.

Answer
Mazda had a recall on the solid state SRS control module but I don't think it extended to 1996 models.  Make the call to see if it does (contact information below).  The MIL on constant means the system is down, check all fuses both under hood and under dash first.  The SRS control module is under the dash, center body.  If you place your hand on the center of the dash where it meets the windshield, its right there.  The entire dash must be removed to access it.  Sounds daunting but not all that difficult.  Sadly it is a one piece unit so if the fuses are fine and connections are cross checked then the control unit has failed.  CAUTION: use a grounding strap when disconnecting the air bag modules, proper carrying procedures must be adhered to so as to avoid injury, static electricity can cause accidental deployment.
