No, it sounds like a constant ticking noise that gets faster as the engine revs, but the sounds lessens as the rpms increase.

Thank you for the reply. I took the valve cover off about 2 weeks ago, and I didn't see anything out of place. So you think that it may be my intake manifold? I do have a short ram intake on it, could it be something to do with it?

-----Question-----
Hi, I asked my cousin about this annoying ticking that is coming from the back side of my motor. He told my that it was my lifters. I have a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 that is out of warranty. Are they hard to change on this motor, or will i have to pay a lot of money to have the dealership fix them? Or will it just be better if I buy another motor?
-----Answer-----
give me the vin no#  there maybe a recall for this problem
-----Answer-----
just checked and there's no open recall for your vehicle..there is no lifters in your engine, it's done by shims.. what you might be hearing is the intake runner blades loose or fallen off, seems to happen mostly on no#4 cyl. pull out no 4 plug and look closly at the tip of the plug, sometimes the blade screws get sucked into the cyl and may show signs of something hitting it.

let me ask you this first.. does it sound like somethings loose in the engine, like somthing bouncing around?

whats the mileage?

Answer
not many miles.. havent seen one do that yet, it's always been those intake runner blades.. well' got a few choices and none are cheap. it's a ticking noise so that leaves out the bottom end, you can either remove the cams and mic each lobe to find out what one has to much play and add shims or take the head off and send it to a machine shop. fairly easy to do either, me working at a dealership i would send the head out to a machine shop  that way they can check it all out and resurface it also.  good luck  and let me know what the outcome was, it may help me some day also!
