Mazda Repair: 96 MAZDA B2300 GAS MILEAGE, electronic control unit, mazda b2300

Question
I have a 1996 Mazda B2300, 2.3Liter, 5spd, a/c. I recently purchased the vehicle with approximately 81,000 miles on it.  The truck is getting 20 miles to the gallon.  I have new wires & plugs (autolite 674 platinum's), the air filter is new and 2-new O2 sensors. My tires are nearly new, balanced and aligned.  I am receiving etc code (check engine) for the coil pack, this is recent within the last two days.
Do you have any suggestions on what might be wrong, what I can do to increase my gas mileage?

Answer
Hi and thanks for writing,
The code you are getting suggests there is a problem with your coil. However your coil may be fine and it may be an error in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). It is more likely, however that there is a problem with the coil or a problem with the connection to the coil.
As for the gas mileage, there may be a problem with one of the temperature sensors which could be causing the car to inject more fuel into the engine then what is needed. Once everything is working properly on your car you shouldn't have any problems. However if you still have problems there are things you can do to marginally increase your gas mileage.
1. dont drive with the windows down while driving about 50 mph.
2. Avoid accelerating to high revs in each gear.
3. Go a bit easier on the car when it is just warming up.
hope this helps
